    I remember going to Aunt Marie's house when I was very small. She had big hugs and good food. One of her children, Billy, was handicapped. We have a family recipe from Aunt Maria for Sloppy Joe's that I still make today.

In 1892, in the year that Marie Busker was born, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.

In 1915, when she was 23 years old, the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. While noxious gases had been used since ancient times, this was the first use of poisonous gas - in this case, lethal chlorine gas - in modern war. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.
