    From the search I'm doing now I have learned that her parents were Salvatore and Virginia Melango. Marie was employed as a bookkeeper at the McCrory's 5 and dime store when I met and knew her in 1943-45. I was l6 and in my last year in high school when I was employed part time as a counter girl. Marie showed much interest in my school work and in me as a person. I felt as if she was a parent and I loved her. She was always very kind to me. Marie was a kind person. She was also very intelligent. Had she had the opportunity for a college education, she could have done very well.

    Marie Melango's family lived in Lodi NJ, Bergen County (USA) when I knew her first in 1943 '44, '45. Sometime in 1950's?)Marie and her family moved to Barnegat, Ocean County NJ. I believe she and her family were in Barnegat in the 1962-63 when she tried to contact me, but I was in Europe during those years.

In 1918, in the year that Marie Melango was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
