Marie was the daughter of Anton Wilhelmsen and Karen Mathilde Ommundsdatter. Her father died in 1900 of tuberculoses. She grew up at Hisoy, Arendal, where she met Ingvald. They had two daughters at Hisoy. They stayed with their grandmother there while Marie and Ingvald tried their luck in the US. Ingvald left Norway some months earlier than Marie. Marie joined Ingvald in the US September 1923. They tried several times in the years to come, to get their children over to the US, but the grandmother wouldn't send them. Ingvald had bought an old vessel from the 1st WW and used it to bring commodities up and down the Hudson River. The first years they lived on the ship. They had another 3 children after Marie arrived. Gladys, Lillian Alice and Ingvald Andreas. Lillian Alice died in an accident in 1931. When their parents died, Gladys and Ingvald Andreas (Andy) was taken care of by their aunt Laura, Ingvald's sister, and her husband Alex Madsen..
