Introduction

"Hartley Knowles married in Batavia with Maria Aletta Wichers who was born in Padang on June 19, 1865. Their marriage, February 29, 1888, was announced in a family advertisement published in the Java-bode newspaper published March 1, 1888." Hartley Knowles originally resided in Pegangsaan Street, Batavia. Their first child, Frederic Hartley Knowles, was born January 3, 1889 in the house. Early in 1890 they moved to the Tanah Abang area. Then, since September 1892 the Knowles family lived in Koningsplein Oost (now the Merdeka Timur street). In this house their first son, Frederic Hartley Knowles, died February 6, 1893 at the age of 4. However, in the house of Koningsplein Oost, a son, Herbert Hartley Knowles, was born on April 13, 1893. it is an excerpt from the book that I am preparing to publish. If Herbert Knowles had children, grandchildren of Hartley Knowles, he would be proud of the story of his grandfather while living in the Indies, working as a businessman.

In 1865, in the year that Marie Wickers Knowles was born, on December 24th, 8 months after the end of the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan was formed in Pulaski, Tennessee by Jonathan Shank and Barry Ownby. They wanted to fight Reconstruction after the Civil War and to intimidate what were called "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags" - northern and southern whites who supported reconstruction. They also wanted to repress the newly freed slaves.
