All rights reserved. ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Heintzelman [contact link] June 19, 2011, 11:54 am Ionia Sentinel Standard, 2002 Marilyn Elaine Wood of L’Anse went to meet her Lord on Fri., March 1, 2002 after a sudden illness. She was born on Dec. 4, 1944 in St. Johns, to Earl and Madeline (Young) Nobis. She was raised on the family farm in Muir, attending school in Ionia. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1962. She attended classes at a small community college in Lansing, majoring in Business. On Aug. 21, 1965, she married high school sweetheart, Donald Wood. They started their lives in Ionia, later moving to Munising and finally settling in L’Anse in 1979, where together they raised son, Jim and daughter, Melissa. Marilyn was an avid gardener of flowers, vegetables and fruits, canning what she grew and giving much away. She enjoyed watching and feeding the birds that came to her feeders. She and husband Don taught square dancing for many years and were still active on the square dance circuit at the time of her death. Marilyn was a member of the L’Anse United Methodist Church teaching Sunday school with husband Don. She was a past member of the church choir and helped out with many of the woman’s group fundraisers. She was an active fundraiser for the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, one of her many charities. She had raised dogs for leader dogs for the blind, in the past as well. Marilyn was active in the Emmaus, Chrysalis and Keryx communities of the Upper Peninsula where she was lovingly known as Mrs. Agape. She served on both their boards and was a current Chrysalis board member. She was involved in Fire-Up every spring in Marquette, sometimes loading the car with kids as well. She loved activities that involved children of all ages. One of Marilyn’s greatest loves was 4H. She currently had 24 children at various times in her home weekly doing crafts with plastic canvas and other recyclable household items. Many of her friends saved matchsticks, bottle caps, etc., for her many projects. She taught many crafts at various 4H functions. She always enjoyed 4H Spring Achievement where her kids, as she lovingly called them, showed off their work for the year. In Marilyn’s spare time she crocheted and knit Afghans and made quilts. She was always doing for others often without their knowledge. She will be sorely missed in this community. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 36 years, Donald; her son, Petty Officer AO2 James (Gigi) Wood of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Melissa Kagabitang of Greenville; grandchildren, David Kagabitang and Gerald and Stephanie Himmelsbach; her mother, Madeline Nobis of Lyons; brother Gordon (Leona) Nobis of Muir; sister, Doris (Daryl) Pierce of Lyons. Her father Earl preceded her in death. A celebration of Marilyn’s life will take place at 3 p.m., Saturday from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Rev. Tom Anderson and Rev. Gary Sasinowski officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral chapel and one hour before services on Saturday. Memorials in Marilyn’s honor may be directed to the Bay Cliff Health Camp. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse is assisting the family with arrangements.
