Marion Degrate 1844 - 1922

Marion Degrate of US was born on July 4, 1844 to Alec DeGrate and Elizabeth Degrate. He was the parent of Florence (DeGrate) Simmons. He married Rose Emily (Moultrie) Degrate, and they had children Josephine (DeGrate) McGee, Eliza (DeGrate) Habishion, Alex DeGrate Jr, Emma (DeGrate) Smith, and Mary Ellen "Mamie" (DeGrate) Peterson. Marion Degrate died at age 78 years old in 1922.

After service in Civil War, Marion Alexander DeGrate became one of Baker County, FL's first teachers of freed men, women, and children; pastored a Methodist Episcoal church in Lone Star -Duval County FL; in 1896, purchased a parcel of land in MacClenny FL on which five generations of his descendants lived until a hostile takeover attempt by developers in 1986; was member of Knights of Pythias and Grand Master of his masonic lodge (located on his property); member of St. Paul Methodist Episcopal church in MacClenny FL. Strong advocate for African American political voting rights: went to town each voting season to vote "for the party of Lincoln."
