She was born at least 9 weeks prematurely. As her grand father and many uncles were doctors they advised her parents that as she was born at approximately 30 weeks gestation she could not be expected to survive. Her parents had lost their first born child only a few months before her early birth and her mother grieved so much that she always blamed herself for Marjorie's early birth. Her mother hand expressed her breast milk and her parents took turns giving her a dropper full of breast milk every hour at first and continued with this modified regime for the many weeks before she was strong enough to feed for herself. We have no account of how they kept her warm but it is assumed she was kept next to someones skin at all times to aid her body temperature regulation otherwise she could not have survived.
