Marshall Selikoff Judge's History: 1917 - 2008

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Judge Marshall Selikoff was a prominent , highly respected trial lawyer and a distinguished Superior Court Judge in the State of New Jersey. He practiced law for 25 years and served as the Presiding Judge of the Civil Division of the Superior Court ( from 1975-1987 ). He was a person of integrity, humility and selflessness . He was warm and open, with a friendly smile and as one of his colleagues said at his memorial " if you bumped into him in the hallway - he had a way of greeting you - always a warm , welcoming handshake or pat on the back - he always seemed genuinely interested in how you were and " what you'd been up to " - with a characteristic calm , easy going manner , he always seemed able to take the extra time to ask about your family and your work and he always left you feeling uplifted - in spite of the pressures you knew he was under. " He was loved by his family , his friends and everyone he worked with through the years - colleagues, clerks and fellow judges. He was completely devoted to his family, loved his country and was honored to serve and to sacrifice for it, and he was commited to the cause of justice, equally carried out under the law, and worked hard , in his practice of law and in the time he served as a judge to make sure that was the case. He was always looking out for others and for ways he could serve. He excelled in everything he did , at every stage in his life. He was a natural leader , who led by example and with humility and compassion. Despite his record of persnal achievement, awards and accomplishments - he always directed the attention and spotlight toward others , deflecting it from himself. He made a positive impact on everyone whose life he touched ... He will be missed deeply but his example and influence, both personally and professionally, will continue to be felt and used as a guidepost by many for years to come ...

In 1917, in the year that Marshall Selikoff was born, the U.S. Virgin Islands were purchased from Denmark in January. While they are U.S. citizens, Virgin Islanders are ineligible to vote for the President of the United States.
Did you know?
In 1924, he was just 7 years old when Macy's department store in New York held its first "Thanksgiving parade" on November 27th at 9a - during church services but leaving plenty of time to attend the big football game between Syracuse and Columbia universities. The parade was held as a way to promote the opening of the “World’s Largest Store” and its 1 million square feet of retail space in Manhattan’s Herald Square. The parade was 6 miles long and included floats, Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and sword-wielding knights, and animals from Central Park Zoo. Santa Claus, of course, brought up the rear - opening the Christmas shopping season for Macy's.
