  • Obituary

Martha's obituary was published in the 5-24-1899 edition of The Current Local, Van Buren, Carter Co., MO on the front page (used with permission). AN OBITUARY. Died, at the home of T. J. Tinsley, two miles south of Ellsinore, on the evening of May 12, Mrs. Martha Tinsley, wife of T. J. Tinsley. Mrs. Tinsley was born in Tennessee in 1833, moved from there to Kentucky where she married T. J. Tinsley, shortly after their marriage they moved to Missouri, in 1858, and located near where Ellsinore now is. Mrs. Tinsley lived a devout Christian life, having been a member of the M. B. Church for 19 years and no one can say that her actions did not prove her to be a Christian. She had been afflicted with lung trouble for about 20 years, though suffering the pangs of disease, she never was heard to murmur. The best medical aid that could be secured was but they failed to check the disease. Mrs. Tinsley was the mother of 11 (note: I only know of 7) children, 4 of whom, Charlie, Thomas, Tom, and Mrs. Dildine survive her. All the children were present when she died except Mrs. Dildine. A message was sent to her but she failed to receive it in time to reach there before her mother's death. Few, indeed, are there near here that has not felt the benevolent influence of Mrs. Tinsley. All that knew her were her friends. To her relatives and friends we will say, weep not for her; she is an angel now, and treads the sapphire floors of Paradise; from her refulgent brow has been wiped away sin, sorrow, and suffering. To her, victorious over death, appear the vista'd of heaven's eternal year. Her memory is a shrine of pleasant thoughts. There is no cause for woe, but rather let this, thy grief, nerve your spirit so that it will walk unshrinkingly over the rough paths of life, and from earth's vile allurements keep you back. Then when a few fleet years have gone she'll meet thee at heaven's gate and lead thee on. Weep not for her! A FRIEND
