At one point, Martha lived near Rushmore Mountain, now known as Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, USA. She later lived in Mineral Point, Wisconsin with her husband Cary. During that time, she regularly corresponded with a female cousin living in South Dakota. Her great-granddaughter Pamela J. Noble has several postcards saved from this correspondence.
