Martha Elmira Larish Koons, was raised on a farm outside of Benton, PA. She had a younger brother, Kenneth Leroy, who always had the nickname of "Jack". Martha's younger aunts (her mother's younger half sisters) were more Martha's age, so there were always people around, not to mention the farm hands. Martha worked hard on the farm, and, in fact, quit high school after 11th grade to help cook for the hands, and run the farm. She always had the dream of becoming a nurse, but that wasn't to be. Her best friend, Peg Sibley, went on to a nursing school in Washington, D.C., and, I believe, Martha never really let go of that dream. She wasn't the kind of person to complain or talk about that, but I think she lived her life fulfilling the dream even though she never had the formal education. She always seemed to be taking care of somebody, whether in her family or a neighbor or her church family. When she was a late teenager, her parents (Loren and Lula) sold the farm and moved outside of Berwick, PA and Martha went to work, cleaning for a lady in Berwick. There she learned more about sewing, which was to serve her the rest of her life.
