Martha (Valentine) Newell was born on January 16, 1817 in Northborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts United States to Elijah Fitch Valentine and Jane (Mahan) Valentine, and had siblings Nancy Crawford (Valentine) Stearns and John William Valentine. She was in a relationship with Andrew Hayward Newell, and had children Andrew Newell, Edward Hooper Newell, and Henry Barkly Newell. Martha Newell died at age 56 years old in 1873.

In 1817, in the year that Martha (Valentine) Newell was born, King Ferdinand VII of Spain - who ruled Cuba - issued a royal decree that made the production and sale of tobacco a legal endeavor in Cuba. The decree created the birth of the Cuban cigar industry.

In 1839, she was 22 years old when in The Boston Morning Post, on March 23rd, the first recorded use of the word "OK" appeared. A columnist in the paper said this: "The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells, is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his 'contribution box,' et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward." While this is the first known time that OK appeared in print, where the word came from is still disputed.
