  • Introduction

    Enlisted 1st A.I.F. in Sydney, 12th March 1916. 18th Battalion, 17th Reinforcements. Farm hand, Shed hand, Fuel man, Wang N.S.W. United Press Association, New Zealand. Dec. 1933. ( Press Association Telegram. ) - MASTERTON, December 26. A swagger, Martin James Flanagan, single, aged 54, was found dead on the roadside on Whakapuni Hill, 15 miles from Martinborough on Sunday afternoon. Evidence at the inquest showed that Flanagan, who was carrying a heavy swag and a suitcase, apparently rested on the roadside and collapsed and died. He saw active service during the war with the Eighteenth Battalion, Australian Forces. He was a native of Hobart. A verdict of death from heart failure was returned.

Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
