He had siblings Mary Jane Purcell, Margaret Victoria Purcell, Elizabeth Ethel Purcell, Ursula Mary Purcell, Tobias Purcell, Jane Purcell, Thomas Purcell, Mich Purcell, and Phillip Purcell. Martin Purcell died at age 57 years old in 1894 in Mortlake.

In 1837, in the year that Martin Purcell was born, on February 25th, in Philadelphia, the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY) - the oldest African-American university in the United States - was founded. It was the first institution for the higher education of black people in the United States. Founded by Quaker Richard Humphreys who gave $10,000 to establish the school, it still exists today - although the location has moved and it has been renamed Cheyney University. Humphreys was concerned about the struggles of free African Americans to make a living.

In 1848, at the age of merely 11 years old, Martin was alive when on February 21st, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels - German philosophers - was published in London. The pamphlet said that "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles".
