  • Introduction

Grandma Martina LaChambre (1889-1971) was catholic. I read the bible to her in her final days. Martina died July 26, 1971 (age 82). Martina came to Hamilton Montana from Lucerne Switzerland around 1907. Martina and Nicholas (died 1925) has 6 children: Martha, Mary, Anna, Charlie, Nick, and Casper. Martina and Nickolas established a homestead up Wild Horse Creek near Hamilton Montana where the family managed there farm and sold milk in Hamilton which was quite a chore since they had to take their product my hand or horse and wagon approximately 5-miles every day. The children all walked to school every day (up-hill both ways). Many adventures including mountain lions, snow, no insulation, and typical difficulties of early pioneer living. I’m amazed any of them survived. Martina married Emil LaChambre in 1932. The children were raised in Hamilton after their marriage. Emil was the Ravalli Valley blacksmith until his death in 1975 (1885-1975). His shop provided a very valuable service to so many. I remember watching him work with farmers and ranchers welders and fabrication while they waited and often didn’t charge anything. He shoed horse while they waited as well. He was an amazing man. I used to stay with him and grandma whenever we visited Hamilton.
