Ankney, Lucy Rebecca Ankney Walker, Elda Ankney Shaulis, Irene Ankney, Irene Ankney Rhodes, Marian Mae Ankney Kocher, Velma Ankney Barklay, Emery John Ankney, James M. Ankney, and Grace Ankney Crossen. Mary Ankney died at age 1 year old in 1904.

In 1903, in the year that Mary Ankney was born, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.

In 1904, in the year of Mary Ankney's passing, the World's Fair, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Attended by nearly 19.7 million people (and later the subject of a Judy Garland film), the Fair was funded by federal, state and local sources to the tune of $15 million. As the name suggests, the Fair was suggested as a way to celebrate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In the past, World's Fairs were a way of bringing new technology to the attention of the masses and this fair was no exception - the use of electricity (the public feared it at the time), personal cars, airplanes, and the electric streetcar were all highlighted.
