1826 World Events
In 1826, in the year that Mary Ann Terrill (Thompson) was born, on February 13th, the American Temperance Society was founded in Boston. In the beginning, the Temperance Society promoted abstaining from alcohol but with time it pushed for abolishing alcohol. Drinking was a severe stress on many families, with drunkenness contributing to poverty and abuse.
In 1860, on December 20th, South Carolina seceded from the United States - the first state to do so. At the time, there were about 4 million people enslaved in the American South.
In 1875, the Bombay Stock Exchange - the first stock exchange in Asia - was established. It was called "The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association".
In 1914, in August, the world's first red and green traffic lights were installed at the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland Ohio. The electric traffic light had been invented by a policeman in Salt Lake City Utah in 1912.
In 1940, on July 27th, the cartoon character Bugs Bunny debuted in his first film A Wild Hare - voiced by Mel Blanc. He has since appeared in more short films, feature films, compilations, TV series, music records, comic books, video games, award shows, amusement park rides, and commercials than any other cartoon character. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "What's up, Doc?"
