She married Leo Earls, and they had children Theresa Earls, Catherine Earls, Robert Earls, and Deanna Earls. Mary Earls died at age 76 years old on January 30, 2002 in Portland, and was buried in February 2002 at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.

In 1925, in the year that Mary Catherine (Konkle) Earls was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

In 1936, she was just 11 years old when on November 3rd, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a second term. He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.
