In 1800, Mary was 30 years old when on August 30th, educated blacksmith Gabriel Prosser organized a slave revolt. He wanted to capture Richmond and kill all whites - excluding Methodists, Quakers, Frenchmen, and the poor - and become king of a new black nation. The revolt failed, he was captured and hung. Slave laws were tightened in Virginia.

In 1810, Mary was 40 years old when in October, King George III of the United Kingdom - King of England during the American Revolutionary War - was recognized as insane. Although he reigned until his death in 1820, he was mentally ill - the cause is unknown - and in 1810 regency was established to oversee his rule. His eldest son was recognized as Prince Regent.
