Mary immigrated from Ireland, likely originally to New York City. I find no records of her marriage to Patrick, however his will indicates Mary was his second wife. They had settled in Indianapolis, IN with daughter Nellie/Ella by 1870. According to DNA evidence it seems unlikely that Mary was Nellie's biological mother, but perhaps may have been another relative or friend of the bio parent(s).

In 1822, in the year that Mary (Donahue) Smith was born, on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.

Barnum and his "circus" began their first tour of the U.S. He had paid $1,000 for an elderly slave named Joice Heth, who he claimed was 161 years old and a former nurse for George Washington. Touring the northeast of the U.S., he made more than $1,000 per week. Joice died the next year - at about 80 years old.
