CARIBOU and PHIPPSBURG – Mary Evelyn McCann, wife of the late Frank W. McCann, died peacefully Jan. 24, 2006, at a Caribou healthcare facility. Mary was born Dec. 11, 1920, in Miami, Fla., the firstborn child of Custis and Mabel (Brandon) Lazeau. Mary grew up in Clearwater and Jacksonville, Fla. She attended the University of Iowa to study music and returned to Jacksonville in 1941, to marry Frank McCoy. Only a few years after their marriage, Frank died of wounds sustained on a battlefield in Italy. She met her second husband, Frank McCann, while working in the Wall Street district of New York City. They lived in North Tarrytown, N.Y. and soon relocated to Jacksonville. In 1963, they moved to Augusta. Mary was employed for 20 years at Progressive Distributors as office manager. Her friends and colleagues in Winthrop will remember how she loved NFL football and “occasionally” winning the office pool. Mary was active in the American Contract Bridge League and achieved “Life Master” status in 1995. She played duplicate bridge with her Augusta Bridge Club friends, never happier than when hosting or attending an evening of friendly competition. Retirement allowed Mary to realize her dream of living near the ocean year round, spending summers at her cottage at Small Point in Phippsburg and winters in the home she, her sister, Martha; and brother-in-law, Dick Meyers, built on Water Island, U.S. Virgin Islands. Mary loved Water Island, spending time on the beach with the special friends she made there and sailing the Caribbean Sea with Dick and Martha. As the century came to an end, she never slowed down. Mary cruised the Danube River, from Bucharest to Vienna, playing bridge with her dear friends, Sally, Jackie and Carol. Her trip to Vatican City was a highlight of her travels. Seeing Japan and walking the Great Wall in China left an indelible impression on her. Mary was part of a crew that sailed a boat from St. Thomas, through the Panama Canal, to Mexico. She manned the lines while navigating the locks and caught sailfish in the Pacific Ocean. She treasured her frequent visits with her sister and brother-in-law, Angela and Dan Reinman. In 2001, Mary moved to Caribou to live with her daughter, but was still able to spend her summers in Small Point with her son. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank McCann; her son, Patrick; her sister, Martha Meyers; and her stepdaughter, Helen Koper. Mary is survived by her son, Michael Brandon McCann; her daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Dr. James P. Savage of Caribou; her grandchildren, Patrick and Skye McCann of South Portland, Mary Kathryn “Kat” Savage of New York City, Patrick and Christine Savage of Caribou; her sister and bother-in-law, Angela and Dan Reinman of Mauldin, S.C.; her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Nancy Lazeau of North Palm Beach, Fla.; her brother-in-law, Richard Meyers of Orange Park, Fla.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. At Mary’s request, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held in June at St. Mary’s Church in Bath. The mass will be followed by a celebration of her life at her cottage in Small Point.
