I knew Mary thanks to her late husband, Mr. C. Thomas Jones {Oct. 1906 - Apr. 1984}, who was Orchestra & Band Director at Wareham High School until 1967. For five years I was chief pianist, especially accompaying soloists and playing solos. I also played Sousaphone at concerts and football games and in parades. Mr. Jones and I were 44 years apart by age but were like best friends. In good weather he and I would take long bike rides, whereby in good weather we would be at his place, "goofing off" with Cello/Piano works, introducing me to beautiful music by Schubert and others. He very much encouraged my learning Organ, which has served me well throughout my life. Upon hearing audio tapes at the time of famous organist E.Power Biggs playing huge Bach works on German organs, I was HOOKED ! In August 1968 Mr. & Mrs. Jones invited me to be with them on their 3-week rental car trip throughout Central Europe. We attended a Violin/Piano recital in the town hall in the northern Bavaria town Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld. In July 1973 I would perform a Piano recital in that very same hall...long story. Another long story: I got acquainted with a young man my age, Josef Treutlein, who became a priest in Würzburg, where he has been ever since. By 1976, already into my five-year sojourn in/around Salzburg, Austria, with my parents with me for the only time, we wpent July 4 {Bicentennial !} at the church in Bad Königshofen, where Josef celebrated his first Mass. For Offertory I played from the KV 594 Mozart Organ work. While in Salzburg I studied a year apiece of Organ and Choral Conducting at the Mozarteum, taught several years at the Salzburger Musikschulwerk, and a host of other activities. This was ALL ultimately based on that same 1968 trip with Mr. & Mrs. Jones. ********************************************************************* The Jones' son, Tom, at the time living in Brockton MA, took me up quite a few times in his small plane. Having folding bikes along, we got to neat Places like Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island, and across Cape Cod Bay from Taunton MA to Provicetown.......quite something! :) Poignant to me, Mr. Jones died April 2, 1984. My wife {Anne...we met at New England Conservatory} and I were on our3-week honeymoon in Hawaii via {guess wht?!?} rental cars. That very day we drove the Hana Coast on Maui. Significantly south from Hana is where Charles Lindbergh is buried, making me think of Tom, hence Mr. & Mrs. Jones. ####################################### SORRY for the length.......after Anne and I were married, and after the remainder of 1984 of trying to find work in a dismal marketplace, in January 1985 I moved to Anne's native Lewiston, Maine, where I have lived ever since. After my folks died, I RARELY got to Wareham. During those few years I do recall spotting Mrs. Jones walking along Wareham streets. However, there was a definite loneliness about her. It seems significant, whe died in April 1993, the SAME MONTH during which Mr. Jones died nine years earlier. Heartbreak is no joke. During that 1968 trip proved my only ttime to really talk with Mrs. Jones, and even then it happened far less than you might think. The bond Mr. Jones and I shared, and the overwhelming living and breathing music in Europe shrank such conversations to a minimum, and it was NOT for failing to like her. I got the impression, she was born in England, but to be honest, I do not know.THere was no English accent. Maybe a comprehensive search here would provide answers, including Mr. Jones' earlier life, where Tom is nowadays {he did move to Atlanta at the time}, and so on.
