Mary Jane (Mcwhinney) Ley of Eaglehawk, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born in 1865 in Chewton, Mount Alexander Shire County to John Mcwhinney and Rose Dempsey Mcwhinney. She had siblings Rose Mcwhinney, Sarah Mcwhinney, John Mcwhinney, Rachel Mcwhinney Ives, James Mcwhinney, Catherine Mcwhinney, George McWhinney, Margaret Mcwhinney, Alexander Mcwhinney, and John Mcwhinney. She married John Ley in 1894, and had a child George Alexander Ley. Mary Ley died at age 32 years old in 1897 in Eaglehawk, Greater Bendigo City County.

At almost the same time that Lincoln was shot, US Secretary of State William H. Seward and his family were attacked at home by another conspirator and Confederate sympathizer.
