    CHESAPEAKE, VA Mary C. Aherron, 91, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2010 in Chesapeake General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 22, 1919 the daughter of the late John and Mary Call and was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth E. Aherron. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Feller and husband Raymond; son, Kenny Aherron, Jr. and wife Pam; four grandchildren, John Feller, Amy Saunders, Stephanie Feller and husband Nick and Travis Aherron and wife Nina; three great grandchildren, Austin, Chayton and Brogan; two brothers, John and Henry Call. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the Francis Gay Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1146 Rodgers Street, Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach. The viewing will begin on Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In 1919, in the year that Mary Lucille (Call) Aherron was born, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.

In 1938, at the age of 19 years old, Mary was alive when on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
