    Mary M. (Spencer) Childers, 84, formerly of Lewisburg, died Thursday afternoon, May 13, at Walnut Creek Nursing Center in Kettering after an extended illness. Born Feb. 18, 1915, in Fillmore (Lee County), Ky., she was the daughter of Strong J. and Ila Dell (Marshall) Spencer. She had lived in Preble County since 1947. Mrs. Childers was one of the original founders of the Preble County SCOPE Program and worked for SCOPE for several years. She attended Living Waters Worship Center, and was a former member of Lewisburg Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Porter Childers, in 1981; a son, Fred Childers, in 1997; sisters, Alice Thorpe and Daisy Mae Spencer; and brothers, John W., Paul J., Sheridan and Bedford Spencer. Survivors include four sons, Glenn Childers of West Alexandria, Lonnie Childers of Clayton, Herbert Childers of Huber Heights and Gary Childers of Kettering; three daughters, Joyce Hoff of Beavercreek, Faye McManama of South Whitley, Ind., and Rebecca Glenn of West Manchester. Also surviving are two brothers, Donald Spencer and Samuel Spencer, both of Cincinnati; three sisters, Ivy Wills of Michigan, Madaline Barrett of Walled Lake, Mich., and Ina Faye Lang of Cincinnati; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday, May 17, at Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
