  • Introduction

    Max Hugh Plankenhorn was born on September 6, 1928 in Ithaca, Michigan to parents Louis Hugh Plankenhorn (1900-1929) and Ruth Elizabeth Carpenter (1904-1971). He had siblings Richard Louis Plankenhorn (1922-1992) and Dean Edson Plankenhorn (1925-2002). As a boy, he lived in Ithaca, Gratiot, Michigan, USA and was a member of the Boy Scouts. On June 26, 1946, Max enlisted in the United States Air Corps as a Private in the Regular Army at Battle Creek, Michigan. His enlistment terms were for the Hawaiian Department, and he served in the Air Corps for almost four years. Max completed his enlistment term and was discharged on April 5, 1950. During his time in Denver, Max met Viola Merril Denham (1931-1995) at a park in town with a lake. They tied the knot in Salt Lake City on August 5, 1949, and a year later, their first child, Ruthie, was born. The couple moved to Lansing, Michigan where they welcomed their son Karl, and later moved to Williamston, Michigan where ten years later, Mark, their final child, was born. In 1965, Max was promoted to the manager position at University Oldsmobile in Williamston. Before his promotion, he had been the New Car Sales Manager at Story Oldsmobile for two years. He had worked at the company for a decade, starting as a salesman and then becoming a used car manager before taking on the role of a new car sales manager. He had more than 15 years of experience in the automotive sales field throughout his career.

Max H. Plankenhorn, widely known in the Lansing area automobile retail field, has been named general manager of Jack Dykstra Ford, Inc., 3500 S. Logan.

He has engaged in the automotive sales field for nearly 15 years. Jack Dykstra, president of the firm, said Plankenhorn will have supervision over all new and used car sales, as well as the company's parts and service departments, and car and truck leasing activities.

Max Plankenhorn has be en named general manager of University Oldsmobile, Karl Story, president, announced last week.
Plankenhorn, 36, succeds Jack J. Erick who has moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., where he is managing another Story Oldsmobile dealership.

Formerly new car sales manager at Story Oldsmobile, Plankenhorn had been at Story for the past 10 years. He worked up from salesman to used car manager to new car sales man• ager, a job he held for the past two years.

Born and raised in Ithaca, Plankenhorn moved to Lansing in 1941, He is an air force veteran. Plankenhorn, his wife and three children reside at 3740 N. Zimmer Road, Williamston.

Ninety Gratiot Scouts Attend With Breckenridge Troop Taking Most Honors
ITHACA, March 27-_ With 90 Boy Scouts and parents witnessing the Gratiot Bov Scout district spring court of honor in the Ithaca high school building Monday evening, seven Scouts of the district were advanced to Star ranking and others received miscellaneous honors. Scoutmaster R. T. Paulus' Breckenridge Troop 106 took the lion's share of honors conferred and won the commissioner's cake given by District Commissioner Fred Poet-zinger of Alma to the troop showing best percentage of advancement since the last court ceremony.

While the Star awards were the highest, the giving of at least three Eagle awards is contemplated for the court of honor to be held in connection with the district camporee late in May. Watt L. Clise of Ithaca, district advancement chairman, conducted the Monday evening court. He was assisted by Dr. Stanley C. Brown and Rolland Crawford of Ithaca. Fred Poetzinger of Alma, and Max Clark of Mt. Pleasant, Scout field executive. 'The Breckenridge troop received a banner for 100 percent Boys' Life subscription membership and a council streamer. Six of its members were advanced in rank and four received merit badges.

Advanced were Fred Coleman, John Fookes and Charles Vine, second class; Quinten Greening, first class; Kenneth and Charles Corbett, Star. Kenneth Corbett was given four merit badges; Charles Corbett, seven; George Bodfish, eight; Thomas Roth, seven, and Quinten and Luther Greening and Dwight Cole-man, one each.

There were two advancements in St. Louis Troop 109, with Darrell Brown and Frank Champion moving up to second class. Robert Perry of Troop 110, Alma, was accorded Star ranking with three merit badges. Second class recognition went to Ricard Roberts of Alma Troop 101, and Ronald Mantey, same troop, received three badges of merit.

Other awards were: Second class to Ronald Wilcox, Marvin Gibson and Max Plankenhorn of Troop 111, Ithaca; star rank and a merit badge to Richard L. Wagoner, jr., of Troop 112, St. Louis; second class to Dale Moomey and Star ranking to Jack Crawford, Stanley Young and William C. Hopkinson of Troop 113, Ithaca, with six merit badges Stanley Young. six to William Hopkinson, six to Jack Crawford and four to Frank Wheeler of the same troop; second class to Charles Reeb of Troop 126, Ashley.
All troops received council streamers excepting 109 of St. Louis and 126 of Ashley. Troop 101 of Alma received a Boys' Life award.
