  • Introduction

Supervisor - Hotel Kurrajong, Canberra. The Canberra Times ( A.C.T. ) 18th February 1961. - ALL WERE NICE GENTLEMEN To "AUNTIE MAY" Politicians come and go, some roar and rant, others talk , but they are all "nice, simple gentlemen" to Miss May Kiessling. Miss Kiessling should know. She has been watching them eat their breakfasts for 32 years. Miss Kiessling, long known to many of Canberra' s most distinguished citizens and their children as "Aunty May," retired this week after 32 years in the dining room at the Hotel Kurrajong. "It really wouldn't be tactful of me to know too much about politics, " she said yesterday, when she was taking a last look around the dining room. Two Prime Minister's who were "really nice" were Mr. Curtin and Mr. Chifley, both of whom made their home at the Kurrajong. The Minister for Trade and Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. McEwen, is almost a new boy to Miss Kiessling. He has only been staying at the Kurrajong for 17 or 18 years. Miss Kiessling often hears from the children of parliamentarians, one who followed in his father's footsteps is Mr. Doug Anthony, Member for Richmond. " I used to take him for walks in his little pusher when Mr. and Mrs. Anthony were staying here.
