In 1869, in the year that May Varner was born, on August 31st, Irish scientist Mary Ward, age 42, was hit and killed by a car powered by a steam engine. The car was built by her cousins. She was the world's first known casualty of a car accident.

In 1871, at the age of merely 2 years old, May was alive when on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.
