    Obituary MEADY L. HILYER Jr. HILYER, Colonel Meady L.,Jr., 83, former Director ofthe Alabama Departmentof Public Safety, died Friday, January 7, 2011, aftera brief battle with cancer.He was born January 19,1927 in Opelika, Alabamaand served two years inWWII in the Navy Seabees.Col. Hilyer was employedas a Highway patrolman in1952. After a number ofyears as a road trooper hetransferred to the executivesecurity for GovernorGeorge C. Wallace. Heand E.C. Dothard servedduring Governor Wallace'sfirst term. He also servedGovernor Lurleen Wallaceuntil her death and thenserved as executive security for Governor George C.Wallace until 1976. Col. Hilyer was with GovernorWallace in 1971, in Laurel,Maryland, when a would-be assassin, attempted totake Governor Wallace'slife. In 1976, Col. Hilyer wasappointed as the AssistantDirector of the AlabamaDepartment of Public Safety. In 1978, he was appointed Director and served inthat position until 1979when he returned to the Assistant Director's positionand served there until heretired in 1987. After retirement, Col. Hilyer, workedpart time at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home until hisillness. He was an avid Auburn fan and a member ofthe Capitol City Chapter ofthe Gold Wing Road RidersAssociation. He was preceded in death by his wifeof 60 years, Joyce Clark Hilyer; and his parents, M.L.,Sr. and Thelma Hilyer. He issurvived by three daughters, Janet (Chad) Jefcoat,Montgomery, AL, Donna(Bennie) McCord,Sprague, AL, Dixie (Calvin)Tyler, Gadsden, AL; onebrother, Bill (Betty) Hilyer,Opelika, AL, one sister,Wyolene Melnick, Opelika,AL; ten grandchildren, Shana (Art) Faulkner, BrandiRoberts, Amy (J.J.) Brown,Tawni Roberts, BrianMcCord, Emily Tyler (Zach)Hughes, Sarah Tyler, SloanTyler, Will (Sherry) Jefcoat,Julie Jefcoat; and 14 greatgrandchildren. Funeralservices will be heldWednesday, January 12,2011, at 1 p.m. at EasternHills Baptist Church with Dr.Larry Armstrong, Rev. Winston Brooks and George C.Wallace, Jr. officiating.Burial will follow at Alabama Heritage Cemetery withfull honors by the AlabamaDepartment of Public Safety Honor Guard. Visitationwill be held Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 3-7 p.m.at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home. Pallbearerswill be Alabama StateTroopers. Honorary pallbearers will be George C.Wallace, Jr., Mays Jemison, Greg Dothard, LeslieDees, Mike Jemison,George Wallace Dothard,retired Alabama StateTroopers, members ofCapitol City Chapter of theGold Wing Road Riders Association and employeesof Alabama HeritageFuneral Home.
