A native of Montgomery County, Maryland, Melissa Lynn Sleeper attended Bowie High School in Bowie, Maryland. When she was interviewed for an article in the yearbook, titled "Lame Alibis", she was asked what excuse did she use when she was late since she could no longer claim "being lost" - the Freshman excuse. Her optimism may have showed in her reply: "One excuse I used frequently when I forgot something was 'I left my homework in my locker.' Although the excuse rarely worked, I used it anyway." Unfortunately, Melissa Sleeper died when she was only 17 years old.
