    Merle John Cujas Sr., of New Brighton, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005, at West Penn Hospital. Born July 15, 1938, in McDonald, Pa., he was a son of the late Margaret and Oliver Cujas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Cujas; two sons, Brian and William Cujas and a daughter, Pamela Cujas. He is survived by two sons, Merle John Cujas Jr. and his wife, Sherry, Freedom, and Richard Cujas and his wife, Kimberly, Rochester; a daughter, Denise Verrenti and her husband, Vince, Rochester; a brother, John Cujas and his wife, Susan, Aliquippa; three sisters, Judith Cope and her husband, Howard, Hopewell Township; Nancy Schwartz and her husband, Jim, in California, and Maryanne Clifford and her husband, William, Hopewell Township, and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the RIGGS FUNERAL HOME, 303 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, W.Va., where a service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow immediately in Grandview Cemetery, Florence, Pa.

In 1938, in the year that Merle J Cujas was born, on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
