Mernetta Viva Talys Armstrong of Mooroolbark, in Australia was born in 1913 in Carlton North Australia to Thomas Henry Armstrong and Eliza Harriet (Pritchard) Armstrong. She had siblings Alma Lilian Armstrong and William Thomas Armstrong. She married Noel William Alfred Shears, and had children Douglas Stephen Shears and Anabel Shears Carter. Mernetta Armstrong died at age 92 years old in 2005.

Previously the Governor of New Jersey and President of Princeton University, he was the first Southerner to serve as President since Zachary Taylor, over 60 years previous.
