2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Merton

The man that raised me: Mert Westerdale
Merton was my step-grandfather on my mother's side. He married my grandmother, Alva Othel Slater after my mom, Elizabeth Ann Oliphant was born. My mother wasn't taking care of me when I was a baby as she should . My grandma Othel & Mert gained custody of me. My grandma died when I was about 5 of meningitis. I was raised by Mr. Westerdale & lived with him until he died. He never remarried. In 1968 we moved from Hugo, Oklahoma to Willis, TX. His brother, Clyde Westerdale came with us and the two brothers worked for Alltex Lumber Co. Setting up a lumber treating plant constructed from the remnants of a post treating plant in Valiant, Oklahoma that was owned by Jessie Westerdale, Clyde & Mert's father. It lasted a few years before Alltex sold the plant to Kiabab Lumber. They closed the plant after a few years. Merton then worked for Conroe Cresoting Co. in Conroe, TX. eight miles from Willis until he retired. He was my "Papa Mert". I couldn't leave him. I miss you Papa.
