Obituary
Mescal "Butch" Cowin, 78 years old, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at the Reid Hospital in Richmond after a long illness.
A daughter of the late Zee and Elizabeth Crook Proffitt, Mescal was born in London, Ky., on April 1, 1927. She moved to the Cambridge City area when she was 16 years old. She worked as a cook and waitress at Whirley's Restaurant in Cambridge City for 20 years and retired in 1989 from the Flagman Restaurant. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Cambridge City Christian Church.
Survivors include four children and their spouses, Gary and Karen Cowin of Richmond, Valerie and Bill Cargal of Cambridge City, Rick and Cheryl Cowin of Cambridge City, Roger and Barbara Cowin of Richmond; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Zee "June" Proffitt Jr. of Detroit, Mich., and Franklin Proffitt of London, Ky.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Phyllis Jo Cowin, in 1955; one brother, Elwood Proffitt; and one sister, Dallas Allen.
She had an unusual first name "Mescal". This was given to her by her father. He got the name from a Zane Gray novel he was reading when she was born. In this novel there was an Indian maiden named Mescal and he liked the name so much that he gave it to her.
When she came to Indiana as a young woman she began working in restaurants. Her customers had such a hard time remembering her name that they all began calling her "Butch". So all the way from then up to the time of her passing she was known to all as either Butch of Butchie.
She was a wonderful mother and a friend to all following the old southern tradition of never turning away anyone hungry.
