Introduction

Back when I knew him in the mid to late 1960's he had a chopper that he worked on and he also owned a sports car. I think it was and Austin Healey. He was living in Southern California at that time and working as a tool and die maker. He was a very likeable man, with many friends. He often hung out with his cousin Jerry Hess and Lee Merritt an old friend from his elementary school days. A friend named T M, I think the T stood for Tom, and another friend named Del were also part of this close nit group. They were all very supportive of each other and very loyal friends. It was a beautiful thing and really nice to be around them all and see that kind of friendship and loyalty. Minnesota was obviously home to them and I knew that no matter how many other places that Mike lived he would always return to Minnesota.

In 1943, in the year that Michael G Mcmorrow was born, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.

In 1950, at the age of only 7 years old, Michael was alive when in February, Joe McCarthy gave a speech alleging that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who worked in the State Department. He went on to chair a committee that investigated not only the State Department but also the administration of President Harry S. Truman, the Voice of America, and the U.S. Army for communist spies - until he was condemned by the U.S. Senate in 1954.
