He married Nancy Louise Lombardo in 1999 in Long Island, Nassau County, New York, and they were married until Michael's death on December 17, 2020 in Setauket- East Setauket, Suffolk County. He had children Gwyneth Caroline Buckley and Jack Michael Buckley. Michael Buckley was buried on December 23, 2020 in Setauket- East Setauket.

Keeler was also involved with the Soviet naval attaché and charges of espionage were feared. No proof of spying was ever found.

In 1972, Michael was only 9 years old when on September 5th, the Palestinian terrorist group Black September, with the assistance of German neo-nazis, kidnapped and killed 11 Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich. The attackers crept into the Olympic Village and abducted the athletes while they were sleeping. A German policeman was also killed.
