Memories of a really nice guy

Michael was a friend of mine; we served in the US Navy together. I was with him when he died.

He was barely out of his teens. We had just completed several weeks at sea aboard a fast attack submarine and had returned to our home base of Pearl Harbor. He loved riding his bike, and decided to celebrate being back in port with a ride from Pear Harbor to Waikiki. He was hit by a truck on the Nimitz Highway, and died several hours later at Queen’s Hospital.

His friends on the ship affectionately called him “Schwabby,” and everybody loved him. He was a very kind young man, and I was proud to have served with him. I still miss him.
