In 1864, in the year that Michelle J Crowley was born, on June 15th, Arlington National Cemetery was created in Arlington Virginia. 200 acres from the grounds of Robert E. Lee's home were set aside to be a military cemetery. The home and grounds had been in Lee's wife's family - she was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.

In 1879, by the time he was only 15 years old, on April 26th, the National Park - later renamed the Royal National Park - the 2nd oldest national park in the world, was formally proclaimed in New South Wales, Australia. It was the first park to have the word "national" in its name.

In 1881, by the time he was 17 years old, on March 4th, James A. Garfield became the 20th President of the United States. On July 2nd, he was shot by Charles Guiteau, a lawyer, in Washington, D.C. The wound became infected and Garfield died on September 19. Vice President Chester A. Arthur immediately became the 21st President.

In 1914, at the age of 50 years old, Michelle was alive when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1924, in the year of Michelle J Crowley's passing, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.
