Mildred (McGorlick) Utting was born in 1892 to John McGorlick and Elizabeth (Fillery) McGorlick, and had siblings Thomas Patrick McGorlick, Clara Lillian (McGorlick) McAlley, Albert Ike McGorlick, John McGorlick, Patrick William McGorlick, Eileen (McGorlick) Nagle, and Rose (McGorlick) Mason. She married Thomas Edward Utting, and they had children John William Utting and Patrick Ernest Utting. She was the parent of Patrick Ernest Utting. Mildred's partner was Henry Francis Barr, and they had children George Barr and Ida Merle (Barr) Eley. Mildred Utting died at age 80 years old in 1972.

In 1892, in the year that Mildred (McGorlick) Barr Utting was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1945, at the age of 53 years old, Mildred was alive when on August 15th, Imperial Japan announced its surrender. On September 2nd, a formal agreement of surrender was signed. Japan and nine other states signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo Bay, calling for the return of all Allied prisoners of war and subordinating the authority of the emperor and the Japanese government to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. VJ (Victory in Japan) Day was celebrated in the United States on August 14th and 15th. World War II was over.
