    Mitsuko Matsukuma, 94, of Salt Lake City, died November 14, 1995. She was born March 12, 1901 in Saga City, Japan to Genichiro and Sada Ezoe Kuranaga. She attended Saga Girls High School. Married Dr. Hisao Matsukuma in Saga City, Japan in 1919. He died in 1949.She is survived by two daughters, Yukiko Tashiro of Tokyo, Japan; and Clara Miyazaki of Salt Lake City; two sons: Hisamichi (Taeko) Matsukuma of Tokyo, Japan; and Richard (Michi) Matsukuma of Upper Montclair, New Jersey; one brother: Masatoki Kuranaga of Osaka, Japan; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Tsuko Matsumoto and brother, Yoshitoki Kuranaga. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 21, 1995 at 7 p.m. at her church for the past 15 years, the Japanese Church of Christ, 268 West 100 South, with a visitation one hour prior to services. Pastors, Dr. George Hanabusa and S. Kent Ikeda, officiating. Memorial services will take place at her church of 25 years, the Japanese Christian Church in Manhattan, New York. Funeral Directors: Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary.

In 1901, in the year that Mitsuko Matsukuma was born, Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. TR, as he was known, had been Vice-President for 6 months when President William McKinley was assassinated. At age 42, he became the youngest President to serve although John Kennedy, at age 43, was the youngest President elected. He was a popular progressive and was elected to a second term in 1904 as a Republican, winning 56.4% of the popular vote and 336 electoral votes.

In 1925, at the age of 24 years old, Mitsuko was alive when in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
