    Myrtle is still alive. She was born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1926 when her father Gus Friedland and mother Sharlie were there. He was studying to be a radiologist. He was one of the first radiologists in South Africa. Myrtle returned aged 3 to South Africa and grew up in Pretoria. She has two brothers, Gerald and Lionel. She went to Pretoria Girls High and UCT where she received a masters in English. She worked as an editor and then married Dr Joseph Victor Todes in 1953 she had two daughters Barbara Gwen Todes who lives in Sydney Australia and Alison Elaine Todes who is Professor Town and Regional Planning st Wits University in Johannesburg. Barbara Todes married Craig Freedman but divorced him. She has twin girls Emily Anne Freedman and Nicola Gabrielle Friedman. Alison has a son Warwick Masson. She is married to Adrian Masson.

Wells' novel, the show began with simulated "breaking news" of an invasion by Martians. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC. Although the current story is that many were fooled and panicked, in reality very few people were fooled. But the show made Orson Welles' career.
