UNERAL HOME Byles Memorial Home - New London 99 Huntington St New London, Connecticut Nancy Helm Obituary Groton - Nancy Ellen (Molle) Helm, 80, of Groton, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. She was born on Dec. 6, 1928, in Marshall, Minn., the youngest of six children born to the late Emile-Valere and Hildur (Eriksson) Molle. Nancy was a graduate of both Stephens College of Columbia, Mo., and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., completing her studies in 1950. She married her husband of over 50 years, John L. Helm Sr., on May 15, 1954. John passed away on Nov. 5, 2004. A student of English and music, Nancy was an accomplished concert pianist but chose to pursue other interests. She was a reporter for the Marshall News Messenger newspaper and then moved to Minneapolis where she was employed as an advertising copywriter for the Brown & Bigelow Department Store, at the time the largest department store in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Her husband-to-be courted her from New York, flying a Piper Cub to Minnesota and finally succeeded in convincing her to come east. While raising her family, Nancy was very active in the Eastern District Committee of the Children's Services of Connecticut, known today as Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut Inc., through 1967, at one point serving as committee president in the early 1960s. Many aspiring pianists also learned to play the ivories under her tutelage until she retired from teaching piano in 1965 and became interested in education. She earned her teaching certificate in 1972 from Connecticut College, New London and taught remedial reading and general curriculum in several Norwich and Groton elementary schools. After retiring from teaching, Nancy traveled extensively with her husband and enjoyed the arts and antiques of all kinds; however, her greatest life-long passion was her family. Her children remember many skiing and boating trips. Although Nancy neither skied nor sailed, she always was along for the ride. More recently, her greatest pleasure was spoiling her two grandchildren. Nancy was a member of the Shennecossett Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Nancy also enjoyed volunteering at the polls on election days and was generally interested in the Groton community. She involved herself in activities important to her over the years, especially supporting the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum, the "Nautilus Museum", as a part of Groton's history and in memory of her husband. She is survived by her children, John L. and Paula Helm of Redmond, Wash., Juli-an H. and Bruce Brown of Old Saybrook, Catherine M. Helm-Clark and Sean Clark of Willis, Tex.; her two grandchildren, Sabrina and Nathan Brown; a sister, Marie F. Spencer of Blue Earth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private. The Byles Memorial Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy's memory to the Submarine Force Museum, Box 501, U.S. Naval Submarine Base, Groton CT 06340. To plant trees in memory

Nancy Ellen Molle
Nancy Ellen Molle

Naval Submarine Base, Groton CT 06340.
