  • Obituary

Published Friday October 18, 1996 in the Newsday (Suffolk Edition) in Melville, New York: Neal Broxmeyer, a partner in Fairfield Properties, which owns and manages thousands of apartments and condominiums across Long Island, died Wednesday, ten months after learning he had a brain tumor. He was 43. Although Mr. Broxmeyer died after spending his last several weeks at New York University Medical Center, friends say the Roslyn Heights resident had remained active until recently at work and as a teacher and leader of the New York School of Practical Philosophy, a 1,000-student adult education center in Manhattan. "For the past ten months, he served as a living example of courage," said Alvin Wasserman, Mr. Broxmeyer's closest friend and the school's treasurer. "He never accepted death as a fact of life, and he would not accept pessimism." He said Mr. Broxmeyer, for example, refused to cancel a class he was scheduled to teach, only five days after his fourth and last operation in September. Those who knew Mr. Broxmeyer described him as an activist whether it was helping launch a private grade school, which now has 70 students, associated with the Manhattan learning center, or starting a private security patrol in his home community after a rash of burglaries. "He's a man who never turned away anyone who needed help," said Wasserman. Mr. Broxmeyer, who was part of the family business for the past 14 years, directed the management of more than 4.000 condominium and cooperative units in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens. In all, Fairfield, a Commack-based firm, owns 3,000 apartments mainly in Suffolk and owns and manages 500,000 square feet of commercial space locally. Raised in Westchester, Mr. Broxmeyer graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1977 and got a master's degree in social work in 1977 from Manhattan's Yeshiva University. While in college, Mr. Broxmeyer met his wife, Susan. They were married for 22 years. After college, Mr. Broxmeyer initially did social work at a mental-health facility in Riverdale. But after five years, he went into the family real estate business, which had been started by his father Joseph, his brother, Mark, and David Schachne. After college, Mr. Broxmeyer also began attending classes at the New York School of Practical Philosophy, one of a half dozen such learning centers in this country and 30 around the world. He has been both a student and teacher, more recently a department head and for the past three years, leader of the adult school. "He was was a philosopher first. It was his one real love in life, said Howard Schott, headmaster of the new grade school and president of the adult school's board of trustees. Survivors include Mr. Broxmeyers's wife; his children, Dara, Jennifer and David; his father, Joseph, of Roslyn; his mother, Muriel, of Roslyn Harbor; and his brothers, Mark and Gary, both of Old Brookville. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today at Temple Sinai in Roslyn Heights. Burial will follow at Montefiore Cemetery in Melville.
