Nell B. Riddle Nell B. Riddle, 73, of Rt. 1, Leatherwood community, Martinsville, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1993, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born June 16, 1920, in the Leatherwood community, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Barrow and the late Nannie McBride Barrow. Her husband, Leonard Riddle, died in 1979. Riddle was a member of Chatmoss Baptist Church. Surviving are two brothers, Dana E. Barrow of Martinsville and Billy A. Barrow of Rockville, MD., and two sisters, Rave B. Reedy and Ann B. Foushee, both of Martinsville, and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Burial Park. Dr. David Adkins will officiate. Memorials may be made to Dyers Store Fire Department or Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad. Tomlinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In 1920, in the year that Nell McBride (Barrow) Riddle was born, on November 2, radio station KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.
