Nellie Mae (Dobbs) Brown was born in 1908 to John Horton Dobbs and Mary Ellen (Gates) Dobbs, and had siblings Hilda Elizabeth Geneau, Minnie Lee Dobbs Rhoads, Esther A (Dobbs) Brigance, Arthur Lecurtis Dobbs, Etta Louise (Dobbs) Richey, John Richard Dobbs, Opal Katheryn Wogoman, Douglas Harold Dobbs, and Bobby Ray Dobbs. Nellie Brown died at age 81 years old in 1989.

In 1908, in the year that Nellie Mae (Dobbs) Brown was born, a mysterious Siberian explosion leveled over 770 square miles of forest. There were no human casualties. Explanations of the explosion have included a comet, meteorite, natural atomic explosion, or a crashed UFO. Although it is called an impact event - the largest one in recorded earth history - there is no crater and it is widely thought that the explosion was caused by a meteor exploding 3 to 6 miles above the earth.

In 1912, by the time she was just 4 years old, in October, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot, but not killed, while campaigning for another term as President with the newly created Bull Moose (Progressive) Party. John Schrank was a Bavarian-born saloon-keeper from New York who had been stalking Roosevelt when he shot him just before a campaign speech. Shot in the chest (and showing the audience his bloody shirt), Roosevelt went on to give a 55 to 90 minute talk (reports vary on the length) before being treated for the injury. After 8 days in the hospital, Roosevelt went back on the campaign trail.
