  • Introduction

    His parents died when he was very young, Being the oldest he tried to care for his younger brothers name Wilson and Olvin. Move from house to house of relatives that would try to care for them. They did not stay in any relatives home, but for a short period of months before they had to move on. Mainly due to funds and food shortages. I know that he enlisted in the US Army in 1944. Served during the Korean Conflict and retired after 20+ years in the Army as an E-5, Specialist. His last assignment was as the Post Commanders personnal Aid at Fort Belvoir, VA.

In 1925, in the year that Nelson Cruz-Mejias was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

In 1931, by the time he was just 6 years old, on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.
