Neva Shires was known to me as Miss Shires. She was my Science Teacher at E. W. Cullen Jr. High.in Houston Texas in 1968 and at the time she was approximately 62 years old. She had a passion for dancing and she would always tell us about the time she danced with Fred Astaire at some Gala event. One time she wore her dancing shoes to a Jr. High School dance and showed a few girls the Charleston.
From what I knew about her is that she was divorced and had no children. I have to assume that she had no surviving relatives since the HCAD tax records show that her home stayed abandoned for quite some time after her death, so no one inherited her property. Her home was located just south of 610 loop near Scott street. She owned an old 1940's vehicle that she drove to and from work every day and I would occasionally see her vehicle on the highway into the mid 1970's. I do not know if or when she may have been moved into an elderly care home nor do I know when she officially retired from teaching. I only know that she was teaching to be able to survive or as she put it... "so I can eat"!.
She lived a long life to age 93 and I have no details of her death or her life after I graduated from Jr. High and I moved onto High School. She was one of those memorable teachers in my life that I always wondered about, then in 2014 I researched and discovered her passing away. From my research about her I did not find an obituary in the Houston Chronicle so I have taken this task upon myself to make sure someone gives a eulogy and recognition for her contributions as a school teacher and all of the lives she touched during her career. Perhaps I can locate the place where she was laid to rest and repost the information.
Miss Neva Shires, may you rest in peace and may God remember you during the resurrection.
