He married Laura Margaret McElmon in 1901 in Halifax, Halifax Regional Municipality County, Nova Scotia, and had children Sadie (McElmon) Crowell, Carl Henry McElmon, Naomi Hilda Tudor, Charles Newton McElmon, and Lillian Nellis. Newton McElmon died at age 82 years old in June 1962 in Johnstown, Fulton County, New York United States, and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery 296 Martin Rd, in Fonda, Montgomery County.

    The Schenectady Gazette. 23rd June 1962. FORT PLAIN - Newton McElmon, 83, of RD 2, Fort Plain, died on Thursday evening in the Johnstown Nursing home, where he had been a patient for a month. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mr. McElmon came to the United States in 1923. He had been a resident of East Stone Arabia for the past seven years. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Edwin Tudor and Mrs. Stanley Wolanuik, both of Fort Plain, Mrs. John Crowell of Barneveld, Mrs. Vincent Hine of Franklin Square, Long Island, two sons, Carl McElmon of Bay Shore, LI, and Charles McElmon, of Glens Falls; 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
