In 1804, in the year that Nicholas Dooling was born, on May 14th, Lewis and Clark started out from St. Louis, Missouri on an expedition to explore the West and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the trip shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He wanted the new territory mapped and wanted to establish an American presence in the West before Great Britain or other European powers could claim it.

In 1834, when he was 30 years old, on July 15th, the Spanish Inquisition - which began in the 15th century - was abolished by the royal decree of Isabella II.
