My husband was legally divorced from his first wife, Rita Simone , so that any claim of her being his spouse or his widow at the time of his death is both false and ludicrous. This can all be traced and documented. What people should remember most about my husband, Nick, was that he NEVER did anything he did not want to do. His actions could be hurtful to those who loved him, but he had a heart of gold.and he was always there when it mattered. Never have I seen a man more devoted to a child than when my step-son, Val, had been diagnosed with the cancer that eventually took his life. Nick loved Val with every breathe he took, When my husband spent his last days in intensive care, his three daughters and all but 2 of his grandchildren were nowhere to be found! His oldest daughter and husband showed up for a brief time and then left to meet her son, leaving my husband in critical condition after his third surgery in two days! The middle daughter came once and left outraged when my husband whispered to her that it was alright if she went home. He was going into heart failure!!! He did not suffer a heart attack. The alarms all went off and we were ushered out of the ICU as the doctors rushed to my husband's bed! After that' she would not pick up her phone when I tried to reach her with information about her father's condition. The youngest daughter never called or bothered to come to the hospital.. As a concerned and loving wife, I found this lack of concern for my husband unforgivable.
Nick was the joy in my life! He had a sense of humor that never stopped. He was tender and loving. There is not a day that passes when I do not remember a gesture large and over the top, or simply sweet and caring, He really did all he could to make me happy. He was good to my family and welcoming to my friends. He would give up his bed and share the floor with me so that my favorite aunt, Roz, could sleep comfortably. He stayed with my grandmother when she was dying because my father was too far away to get there in time. I was at work, and he met me at my job to break the sad news. My grandmother told me that Nick would be the man I would marry long before I ever thought he would become the love of my life! She told me that he loved me before I fell in love with him. She was right! My grandmother, Selma, and Nick shared a mutual admiration of each other.
Nick was not a perfect man, but he was the best man I ever knew. It was my honor and my good fortune to have been loved by this man, I am proud to have been his wife and now, his widow.
